Pearl has been described by those who saw her during the Gem war as a "terrifying renegade Pearl", and yet, in the show's present day, we see a character who is often nervous and self-doubting. That's not to say that Pearl is meek. She's still courageous in battle, and she is bossy and very particular. She's also highly emotional. She's not a servant, (which is the sole "purpose" of a Pearl in Gem society), and she is still a warrior, but it would seem that the trauma of war, along with the loss of Rose Quartz, has left her a changed Gem.

Pearl is now careful; an intellectual who always likes to have a plan before acting. She also deals with some self-loathing. It has improved recently, but Pearl once mentioned wondering what Rose would think of her now, which shows how she has changed and has insecurities about if these changes are positive or not.

Shortly before coming to Starhue Valley, Pearl dealt with some of her more personal demons, and she has long been fighting corrupt Gems and Homeworld soldiers. Honestly, she just needs a break at this point, and it seems this odd valley is the best place for that.
